The Interdisciplinary Laboratory

 Pre-Lab Assignment #2 for Experiment #4:
Molecular Weight of Macromolecules

The following flow times were observed for a solution of 0.4 mg/mL of a certain polymer:

116.64, 117.78, 118.13, 118.12, 117.77 all times in seconds.

The water flow times in seconds were: 89.78, 89.90, 89.50.

The solution was prepared by diluting a stock solution of 1.010 mg/mL whose uncertainty was 0.002 mg/mL.  The dilution was made by taking two 10.00 mL aliquots putting each into a 50.00 mL volumetric flask and filling to the mark.  The uncertainty in pipet delivery can be taken to be 0.08 mL each and the uncertainty in the total volume 0.1 mL.  Calculate the actual concentration of the solution.  Calculate the inherent viscosity for this sample and the uncertainty in the inherent viscosity.

Submit via e-mail the solutions (and accompanying calcuations) to this pre-lab assignment to Professor Van Hecke (Gerald_VanHecke@hmc.edu) by 7 p.m. on Monday, November 3 for Group 2B or Monday, December 1 for Group 2A.
