| The key texts, due to their length, are The Pickwick Papers, Bleak House, and Tess of the D'Urbervilles.
You may, of course, read more of our novels. To ensure that you will remember the books well enough to discuss them in class
months after you read them, we recommend that you do the following:
- Take notes while you are reading (preferably the notes will be in the margins of your book).
- Answer the study questions on the syllabus under "Required Texts."
- Compile a list of characters as they appear (preferably the list will be somewhere in the front of your book).
Each listed name should contain a short sentence or phrase that will allow you to remember who the character is
and what he or she does.
Remember that class and on-line discussion--both dependent on being able to discuss what you've read--will be worth 25 percent
of your final grade.
