Harvey Mudd College: Literature 117

Fall 2008 Discussion Site

The discussion site for HMC Literature 117: Dickens, Hardy, and the Victorian Age is hosted by Sakai. You can access the password protected site here.

Once you've logged on and opened the Lit 117 site, click on the "Forums" link on the left-hand side of the screen. The forums are listed by the title of the novels we will read during the semester, and each forum contains a "preliminary thoughts" and "short essay" topic. Choose the appropriate link (note the due dates listed below the topic titles). Once you have arrived within a topic, you have two choices: either post a new thread by clicking on the link at the top left, or reply to a current thread by opening the thread and using the reply button. Use new threads if no one has yet posted on the subject you intend to write about. Use the reply button if your subject has already been brought up or if you would like to respond directly to someone else's ideas.

The Sakai interface allows for rich text, plain text, and HTML editing.

For the "Preliminary Thoughts" topics (due by noon September 3, September 17, October 8, October 22, November 5, and November 19), you should write about one or two issues in, or post a series of questions or observations about, the novel we are currently reading, even if you haven't yet finished it. You may also respond to someone else's posting. See the sample postings associated with The Pickwick Papers on the Sakai site.

"Short Essays" (due by noon on September 10, September 24, October 15, October 29, November 12, and December 3) should address something that you deem important in our current novel. These postings--a longish paragraph at a minimum--should be carefully composed and considered. You might want to quote from the novel to support your ideas. You are free to respond to postings at any time, and you should read through all of the postings each week before class. Again, see the sample postings associated with The Pickwick Papers on the Sakai site.
