Site Reports: Instructions, Topics, and Assignments

Instructions

You will be responsible for a site report, the presentation of which will be made while standing in front of your object of study (or, in a few cases, an object by your object of study). Whatever topic you wind up with (and we, of course, think that they're all fascinating!), you need to become the class expert. Stanic, Los Angeles Attractions, contains brief descriptions of many of these sites, and you can find material on the web for all of the report topics. In addition, the library and your dear professors have book resources for most of the topics. Your presentation:
  • must occupy no more than ten minutes (we will be timing you);
  • must therefore be very well rehearsed;
  • must be very well researched (and you should be ready for follow-up questions from your classmates and professors);
  • must include a handout for your classmates--a two-sided sheet at the maximum--that presents information, images, plans, related facts, chronologies, etc. related to your topic (these sheets need to be handed to one of your professors by noon the day before your talk; he will photocopy a sufficient number of copies for the class and bring them along for the trip);
  • must include a bibliography of sources consulted on the handout.
We have a passing familiarity with all of the topics, and we'd be happy to meet with you if you'd like to consult before beginning your research. Heck, we may even be able to loan you some materials.

Please note that this site report, while short in duration, is worth one-quarter of your final grade. That weight suggests the value that we place on your efforts to learn about your topic. Your grade for the project will include both research and presentation components.
