Research Paper Formatting Requirements

(1)        The paper will have a minimum length of 3,000 words and must be typed. Use your word-processor to do a word count and include the word count at the end of the paper in brackets:

[5012 words]

(2)        Margins must be set to standard Word margins, 1.25” left and right, 1” top and bottom.

(3)        The entire text including quotes and footnotes or endnotes must be double-spaced. Paragraphs are to be indented and there are no extra spaces between paragraphs.

(4)        Use a common and standard font (i.e. Arial, Times New Roman - something that looks generally like the font on this page) and use a font size no smaller than 11 pt and no larger than 13 pt.

(5)        Quotations must be double-spaced and with wider margins that the standard text unless they are short enough to be included in the text (the rule of thumb is about 20 words, though sometimes this decision will depend upon context). If in the text, quotation marks must be used. If indented and separate from the text, quotation marks need not be used.  All quotations must be cited with footnotes or endnotes using any standard format for citation.

(6)        Either footnotes or endnotes are allowed. Either must be double-spaced and in a smaller, but not larger, font than the text.  Use any standard format.

(7)        You must include a bibliography. Use any standard format.

(8)        There must be a title page, which will include the title, your name, a date, and information about the class (Economics 179  Spring 2007).

(9)        The paper must have a cover of some kind.

(10)      Illustrations, graphs, or tables are allowed. They must be labeled and cited by number if used:

Refer to Illustration 3.

(11)      Errors in spelling and grammar (especially spelling!) will be penalized heavily.

(12)      You must use at least four sources in this paper. Also, either (a) at least one of those sources will be a book [typically written by the author about whom you are writing] or (b) two of those sources will be academic journal articles. Internet sources are allowable for the remainder, however, they must be sources of substance (as opposed to, say, a small entry in Wikipedia).

(13)      There are heavy penalties for late papers.
