Course Assignments and Support Material
CGU Management 373 and EMGT 386

This page will include all of the homework assignments that are used in the CGU Management 373 course and in the Executive Management 373 course.. Class material is not added to this page until we are ready to use it, so page content changes frequently. While the class is in session, be sure to check this page at least once a week before coming to class, even though I will always announce the assignments in class.

Most of the downloadable files on the page below are self-extracting zip files that unzip into Excel workbook files that can be used directly in Microsoft Excel Version 5.0 or higher, including the Office97 version. Some of these files require Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available free. Means of obtaining the Acrobat Reader free are shown on the course listings page.

Sometimes there are bugs, so if this does not work, email the instructor at and we'll get it fixed.

Note: Both the zipped file and the Excel spreadsheets are always checked for viruses using the most recent Semantec virus checker prior to being made available to students. They should be very safe. Nonetheless, it is always a good idea to have a resident virus checker running when downloading executable files and spreadsheets off of the internet.

Assignment 1: Purchase Accounting Workbook and Homework Set

Assigned during lecture 2. If you see this assignment before the second lecture, try to download it and bring it to class.

The homework assignment is downloadable here as an Acrobat Reader file (see the top of the page) because of its length. Download, print, and read this file. A copy of it will also be provided in the second lecture. Here is the file:

purchacc.pdf (Acrobat Reader file, 14.9 KB)

The Excel workbook needed to do this homework is downloadable here as a self-extracting zip file. This file requires Office97 version of Excel to run. If you need an older version, email Prof. Evans and he can attach email a version 5 Excel file to you. Download and unzip this file, bring it into Excel and take a look at it. Instructions for the use of this workbook in the homework assignment will be described in class. Here is the self-extracting zip file:

purchacc.exe (71.5 KB)

Assignment 2: Calculating Abnormal Returns

Assigned during lecture 3. The homwork assignment, which will be given to you in class, is also downloadable here as an Acrobat Reader file. Download, print, and read the file. Here is the the homework file:

abnret.pdf (Acrobat Reader file, 5.25 KB)

This assignment requires an Excel workbook, downloadable as a self-extracting zip file. (Again, I can email older versions of this file to you). Download and unzip the file, then follow the instructions outlined in the homework assignment. Here is the workbook:

abnret.exe (self-extracting zip file, 40 KB)

Assignment 3: Evaluating Cashflow, ROIC, and Performance Variables

Assigned during lecture 4. Included here are two primary programs that will be used in numerous applications. Instructions in the use of these programs and the specifics of the homework assignment will be discussed in class.

The first set is a self-extracting zip file including an Excel workbook labeled finances.xls, a PDF file that includes the income statement and balance sheet for Hershey, and an instruction sheet. The finances.xls file is a full accounting workbook that allows you to enter three years of balance sheet and income statement data in order to calculate cashflow, ROIC, and many performance vaiables. If you want to get a jump on the homework, after you have saved the Excel workbook, load the data from the hershey.pdf file into the workbook. Here is the finances file:

finances.exe (self-extracting zip file, 48 KB)

The second set is a large self-extracting zip file while includes an old DOS based proforma cashflow forecasting model and many supporting files. This is a difficult program to use and will be explained in class. You may want to try to bring it up to see how it works. If you can figure out how it works, load the data from the Hershey.pdf file (used above) and try to do a proforma forecast with that data. Do not try to print reports from this file until I have discussed that in class! That will eventually become a homework assignment. Here is the cashflow file (notice: This file is copyrighted and may not be used in applications outside of this class):

cfmodel.exe (self-extracting zip file, 185 KB)

Assignment 4: More on cashflow and reviewing algebraic valuation models

Assigned during lecture 5. Here are two homework assignments. Try to complete these by next week. The first is based upon the cashflow model distributed last week and is a PDF file:

cashhw1.pdf (Acrobat Reader file, 2.7 KB)

The second is a simple homework that relies upon an Excel workbook that includes an algebraic valuation model. Here is the homework assignment:

algebraic.pdf (Acrobat Reader file, 2.7 KB)

and here is the workbook

algebraic.exe (self-extracting zip file, 61 KB)

Assignment 5: Calculating present discounted cashflow from the proforma cashflow model.

Assigned during lecture 6. This is not a homework so much as an Excel workbook that you need to download and use in your case studies. No homework was assigned because you need to now dedicate more of your time outside of the classroom to applying these models to actual case studies. The workbook below is loaded with default data from the Hershey case study that we have been using up to this point. This workbook is hard to use. To understand how to use the workbook you must first carefully read the document labeled Cashflow, Free Cashflow, and Proforma Forecasting. That document includes instructions for using the large proforma cashflow model and this workbook in combination. You were provided a copy of that document in an earlier session. Here is the same document in PDF format:

PDVCash.pdf (Acrobat Reader file, 23.1 KB)

Here is the self-extracting zip file the contains the Excel workbook. The use of this workbook will be explained in class:

PDVCash.exe (self-extracting zip file, 36.6KB)
