Module 1 Introduction to Equities reading and homework assignments

Complete these assignments in the following order (due dates are shown where
appropriate):
Reading assignments and tasks
The reading assignments should be completed by the middle of
the module.
- Immediately read Introduction to the World of Equities Chapter 1.
- By the beginning of week 2
(September 6) read A Supply and Demand Model for
Stocks Chapter 2.
- Go to any one of the
brokerage sites discussed in Chapter 1 and explore their features, fees,
what they offer, and how they work. In addition to the sites discussed in
Chapter 1, you may also want to visit a low-fee site like tradeking and an integrated site with all classes of
trading like Open E Cry.
- Peruse both http://finance.yahoo.com and http://finance.google.com and become
familiar with their layout. Follow their instructions to open a guest
account to build a stock portfolio in at least one of these (if you are
already a yahoo or google general member this is
easy to do, otherwise join one of these sites). Do this immediately. Note:
Instructions for building your portfolios assume that you have a yahoo
account.
Homework Assignments
All online homework assignments for this module are found on the Course Assignments page for this class. (Note: Some of
these are tied to homework assignments that are to be given out in class.) The
following assignments are due for this module (due dates are shown where
appropriate):
Assignment 1 – Build a stock portfolio
Part 1 (due September 6)
Part 2 (this must be done on the weekend of September 16-18
[see instructions] and is due Tuesday, September 20 [during Module 3] in class).
