Reading discussion
assignment 1
Over the next two weeks read the first three chapters of Heilbroner. This is background material
and although I may comment on some of this material, we won’t discuss this in
class.
For in-class discussions, begin by reading the Introduction
and chapters 1 and 2 of Buchan. Be
prepared to discuss the following questions beginning January 28 (Monday)..
- In the
introduction of this book, does Buchan present Smith as the free-market
icon for which he is now honored?
- What
was the nature of Smith’s early education? What was Oxford like in these
years? What kind of teacher was Smith? What sort of reputation did he
have? What was the nature of Glasgow University at the time of Smith’s
tenure? What did James Watt do at Glasgow?
- As
Buchan wrote, “Facts were in short supply …” when some of the most
formative ideas of the modern era were inspired. So what was substituted?
- Was
Smith a religious man?
