The following HMC community members won an HMC meal coupon after
their names were drawn from those attending the most recent
CPR training.
Adam Johnson, Assistant Professor, Chemistry
Tim Buchheim, System Administrator, Computer Science
2) CHEMICAL HYGIENE PLAN (CHP)
Tony said that a link should be established, on both the Physics
and Engineering Clinic web pages, referencing the College CHP.
Regulations now require this link.
3) RADIATION SAFETY COMMITTEE
Karl Haushalter, Assistant Professor of Biology and Chemistry,
is the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for HMC. He chairs the
Radiation Safety Committee. Other committee members include:
David Asai, Professor of Biology and Department Chair
Richard Haskell, Professor of Physics
Annie Atiyeh, Physics Lab Manager
Annie said that the radiochemical use license has been extended
to include users from Physics, Chemistry and Biology departments.
She also said that all required and requested radiation safety
trainings will be done through the Radiation Safety Committee.
4) NEW COMMITTEE STRUCTURE
Annie reported on her meeting with the new interim Dean of Faculty,
Professor Thomas Helliwell. The need for a new structure for the
HMC Employee Safety Committee was discussed. During the meeting,
she also discussed with him the concerns of the Committee members.
These concerns included the need for more active involvement of
faculty and senior staff in the implementation of employee safety
training programs.
5) OPEN DISCUSSION OF NEW COMMITTEE STRUCTURE
A. The necessity of HMC maintaining its active Injury and Illness
Prevention Program was discussed. The costly consequences of
not enforcing attendance at safety sessions was mentioned.
B. It was suggested that the new Employee Safety Committeeshould
include student members, and that the Committee chair should be
a member of the senior staff.
C. Regulations require that the Employee Safety Committee meet not
less than 4 times per year. This method should be designated
as best practice. It will ensure effective communication,
which is essential.
D. Tony requested a timeframe in which the decisions would be made
relative to the new structure of the Committee. Several Committee
members suggested that Annie and Tony meet with the new interim
Dean of Faculty.
6) Next meeting: will be scheduled after restructuring and formulation
of the new Employee Safety Committee
A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in
Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).
If you would like a hard copy, send your request to Annie Atiyeh
