Minutes from Meeting on November 17, 2000

In Attendance:

Annie Atiyeh (Physics - annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu)
Lillian McCollum (Chemistry - lillian_mccollum@hmc.edu)
Elaine Guerra (Biology - elaine_guerra@hmc.edu)
Theresa Potter (Facilities and Maintenance - theresa_potter@hmc.edu)
Chris Sundberg (Asst. Dean of Students - chris_sundberg@hmc.edu)

Agenda Items:

1) NEXT SAFETY TRAINING SESSIONS
A possible date for staff is Thursday, February 8. Since faculty
meetings are held twice a month on Thursdays, February 16 (Friday),
seems a likely date for faculty training.

A corporate criminal liability training session "for supervisors
only" is scheduled for March. The session will be presented by
Tony. Plans will be finalized at the January meeting.

Fire extinguisher training is tentatively scheduled for April 20.
Final arrangements will be made with Tony, who will conduct the
    session.

2) FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING
First aid and CPR training are open to the entire community every
fourth year. This year's 8-hour July training session will be open
to the entire community, and will be done by the Red Cross. The
HMC Employee Safety Committee budget will defray the expenses for
    the Red Cross.

Annie mentioned that the first aid training certification received
by the participants will be valid for 3 years. The CPR must be
    renewed every year.

3) TRAINING OF DINING SERVICES PERSONNEL
It was previously established that since members of the Dining
Services staff are HMC employees, they should attend the employee
safety training sessions specified by their supervisor. Annie has
not yet received this specified list. After some discussion,
this issue was tabled until the January meeting in 2001.

4) CHEMICAL HYGIENE PROGRAM
Hal will establish the HMC Chemical Hygiene Committee next year.
It is preferred that committee members be HMC faculty or their
    designated represntatives.

5) OPEN DISCUSSION

    A. Theresa mentioned the need for some sort of device or method
that can be utilized to guide persons to exit doors in case of
power outage emergencies. Suggestions are needed for marking
       dark areas such as stairwells.

All ideas should be forwarded to Theresa.

    B. It was mentioned that each member of the HMC staff and faculty
should be supplied with a flashlight for use during power
outages and other emergency situations. Will the Emergency
Response Team be responsible for the cost and distribution of
       the flashlights?

    C. Delivery of bulky and heavy items to Libra loading dock was
discussed. Theresa said that Facilities and Maintenance staff
should not be called upon to unload extremely large and heavy
items. Additionally, it is very important that the proper
equipment (pallet jacks and lifts) be available.

The use of CUC Physical Plant and various outside agencies was
       discussed.

Theresa will research the issue and notify the necessary HMC
       personnel concerning her recommendations.

    D. Records of all safety training sessions, given by Tony,
should be forwarded to Annie. This will ensure that accurate
records are maintained for every employee's training, and that
the correct information is entered into the HMC Employee Safety
       Committee matrix.

6) Next meeting will be:  Friday, January 19, 2001; 11:00 am;
   Stauffer Room
