Harvey Mudd College Employee Safety Committee
*******************************************
Minutes from Meeting on November 14, 2003
In Attendance:
Annie Atiyeh (Physics - annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu)
Kimberly Rogers (Human Resources - kimberly_rogers@hmc.edu)
Lillian McCollum (Chemistry - lillian_mccollum@hmc.edu)
Theresa Potter (Facilities and Maintenance - theresa_potter@hmc.edu)
Tony Pennington (EH&S Manager - tonyp@cuc.claremont.edu)
Agenda Items:
1) SAFETY TRAINING SESSION
It is desirable to have more faculty members attend the CPR
training. A minimum of ten participants is preferable. Kimberly
will obtain a training date and schedule from the Red Cross.
Ramona has informed the Committee that Dining Services currently
will not sponsor CPR training in Spanish. Training in English will
be open to all Dining Services employees through the HMC Employee
Safety Committee.
Annie will speak to Bill Casey, General Manager of the HMC Dining
Services, concerning safety training for managers and section
leads.
2) GREEN SHEET
Annie informed the committee that the Wednesday Green Sheet will
no longer be published at this time.
3) DINING SERVICES AND F&M SAFETY TRAINING
Because Ramona does not currently work on Fridays, Bill Casey,
will attend the Committee meetings.
Dining Services and F&M will now maintain their own records for
employee safety training. Future safety training will be
scheduled in-house, and will be monitored in-house. This method
will permit much more flexibility in determining the specific
safety training needs of these two departments.
4) SAFETY TRAINING INCENTIVES
After some discussion, the Committee decided to adopt Tony's
suggestion. Drawings will be held for the attendees of each
training session, as was previously decided. The winner will
be awarded a coupon for one free meal at Platt. Annie will
speak with Bill Casey concerning budgeting details.
Kimberly will prepare the coupons. Also, Annie will bring, to
the next meeting, the names of attendees at training sessions held
earlier during this fiscal year.
All meal coupons must be spent by graduation day in May, 2004.
5) OPEN DISCUSSION
A. Relative to an incident that occurred in Platt earlier this
year, Tony expressed the need for a booklet on procedures
dealing with "how to shut down and restart gas equipment".
Annie will send a letter to Jon Strauss, President of HMC,
requesting information on follow-up and further developments.
B. Tony mentioned that there should be a review of the "Loss-Run"
for HMC. These logs, of safety incidents that occurred at HMC,
come through the insurer and are given for each fiscal year.
6) Next meeting: Friday, January 23, 2004 at 11:00am in the Stauffer
Lounge
A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in
Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).
If you would like a hard copy, send your request to Annie Atiyeh
at annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu
