Agenda Items:
1) NEXT SAFETY TRAINING SESSIONS
A session on Corporate Criminal Liability is scheduled for Thursday,
November 7, 2002.
A session on Workplace Violence II and III is scheduled for Thursday,
December 5, 2002.
On Thursday, February 6, 2003 (staff) and on Thursday, February 13,
2003 (faculty), sessions are scheduled for the Five Combined Topics.
Fire extinguisher training is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, 2003.
Kimberly Rogers will be in charge of scheduling First Aid and CPR
training during June or July. Tony will assess the National Safety
Council on-line training for First Aid and CPR; he will give feedback
to the Committee.
2) SAFETY TIPS
Annie is requesting safety tips for the Green Sheet from the Committee
members. Tips should be submitted by November 15.
3) REPORTED INCIDENT
Kathy Morrison (Physics Department) wrote a letter to F&M dated September
15, 2002, regarding the explosion of a bottle of sulfuric acid that had
been placed on the dock for intended pick-up and disposal. Clean-up was
supervised by Theresa.
Theresa had meetings with various Department chairs and staff members
to discuss the storage and handling of hazardous waste. Each Department
is now responsible for retaining its hazardous wastes, within the respictive
Department, until a pick-up is scheduled.
4) HAZARDOUS WASTE GUIDLINES
Tony said that CCR Title 22 governs hazardous waste in CA. All hazardous
waste containers and storage areas must be specifically labeled "Hazardous
Waste."
F&M only handles light duty blood, vomit, & limited hazardous waste for
clean-up. CCR Title 8 stipulates that the CHO be contacted concerning
all hazardous waste spills.
Lillian clarified that Professor Hal Van Ryswyk, the Chemical Hygiene
Officer (CHO) for HMC, is available to give advice relative to chemical
spills and matters dealing with chemical emergencies.
5) SAFETY PROMOTION AND INCENTIVES
There was some discussion concerning incentives to promote employee safety
and to enhance the visibility of the Employee Safety Program.
Suggestions included:
1) a raffle for those who attend the safety sessions; to have ID cards
of the winners (1 winner per 5 attendees) credited for $10.00 to enable
them to eat at Platt or any other dining facilities at the Claremont
Colleges, including the Hixon Court cart
2) Tony suggested an "ice cream bonus" for the Department that is
first to complete the Safety Training Sessions
6) OPEN DISCUSSION
A. Annie has received requests from faculty and admissions staff to
provide safety training sessions on a weekday other than Thursday.
This will be taken into consideration for the scheduling of safety
sessions for the 2003-2004 academic year.
B. The Physics Department is trying to solve the problem of particulates
and contaminents in the air handling systems of the Jacobs and Keck
buildings. Jan Brown is working with F&M and Tony Pennington to this
effect. Tony recommended an industrial hygienist to Jan Brown,
who also asked Malcolm Lewis, an HMC Trustee, to inspect the buildings.
7) Next meeting will be: Friday, January 31, 2003, at 11:00am in the
Stauffer Lounge.
A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in
Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).
If you would like a hard copy, send your request to Annie Atiyeh
at annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu
