Agenda Items:
1) FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING
Community First Aid and CPR training for certification
will be offered on Saturday, July 7, 2001 (in Spanish),
and on Saturday, July 21, 2001. The training will be held
at the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and will
include First Aid Basics, Adult CPR, and Infant CPR.
Space is limited to 15 participants per session.
Both sessions will be full day sessions from 8:00am until
6:00pm. The cost of $35.00 per person will be paid by HMC.
Those who take the course should be prepared to make the
commitment to renew their CPR certification annually, and
to renew their First Aid certification every 3 years.
There will be additional First Aid and CPR training, in Spanish,
during the month of August.
2) SAFETY SESSIONS
The "Five Basic Safety Sessions" and a fire extinguisher training
session were held for dining services employees on April 6, 2001.
The sessions were conducted in Spanish by Ed Arismendi, EH&S
Consultant.
3) DINING SERVICES EVALUATION
Ed Arismendi noted safety concerns regarding the #10-size
can opener. The existing can opener is of poor quality
and is difficult to operate; this condition could result
in injury to employees.
Ed noted that the area round the oven is very narrow, and an
employee could potentially be burned while inserting and
removing items. All employees should be encouraged to
use extra care.
Annie suggested that Aaron send a letter to the Committee
regarding these dining services employee safety issues. He
should then forward a letter to President Strauss outlining
the HMC Employee Safety Committee recommendations for
improvements in the dining services food preparation areas.
According to Ed, one of the improvements should be in the
"pizza-place" station. This area is presently too crowded
and should be remodeled to safely accommodate more employees.
4) OPEN DISCUSSION
A. Tony thinks that HMC should eliminate the use of
chlorine gas (toxic), which is presently used to sanitize
the swimming pool. All the other colleges use non-gaseous
chlorine applications.
B. During the August meeting, The Committee will make a schedule
of faculty/staff safety training sessions for the upcoming
2001-2002 academic year. In order to avoid scheduling conflicts
with faculty meeting days, information received from the Dean
of Faculty's Office will be used.
5) Next meeting will be: Friday, August 17, 2001, at 11:00am in
the Stauffer Lounge.
A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in
Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).
If you would like a hard copy, send your request to Annie Atiyeh
at annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu
