Harvey Mudd College Employee Safety Committee
*******************************************
Minutes from Meeting on June 16, 2000
In Attendance:
Annie Atiyeh (Physics - annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu)
Lillian McCollum (Chemistry - lillian_mccollum@hmc.edu)
Elaine Guerra (Biology - elaine_guerra@hmc.edu)
Theresa Potter (Facilities and Maintenance - theresa_potter@hmc.edu)
Mike Wheeler (Machine Shop - mike_wheeler@hmc.edu)
Agenda Items:
1) TRAINING SESSIONS
No Departmental training sessions will be held during the summer
months.
If food service providers are HMC employees, they should be
required to take the 5 basic safety training sessions. Mention
was made that the Director of Food Services should be a member of
the Employee Safety Committee. The Business Affairs Office and
the Office of Student Affairs will be contacted before a decision
is made.
Tony will provide all-campus defensive driving training for cars
and vans. Individual training for electrical cars will be
available upon request.
Tony is planning to offer an all-campus radiation safety
training this fall.
2) SAFETY SESSIONS AND RELATED INFORMATION
Recertification for CPR will be held at the Red Cross Center in
Claremont on July 15, 2000. In July 2001, CPR and first aid
certification training will be open to all HMC employees.
Annie has forwarded a copy of the video on "College Dormitory
Safety" to the Dean of Students Office. She also made mention
of the HMC websites currently available for Fire
Extinguisher Use and Safety.
The Employee Safety Committee should have a current listing of
all students who are certified for CPR and First Response. Annie
will obtain this information from the Dean of Students Office.
3) CHEMICAL HYGIENE PROGRAM
Professor Hal Van Ryswyk (Chemistry) has agreed to chair the HMC
Chemical Hygiene Committee, and oversee the implementation of the
HMC Chemical Hygiene Program. Because he is presently on
sabbatical, formal seating of the committee will not occur before
the beginning of the fall semester.
Concerns were expressed about the need for an emergency eye wash
and shower inspection program. It is presently the responsibility
of each Department to perform the scheduled inspections. To make
sure that HMC adheres to Cal-OSHA regulations, Theresa will
develope a program and inform each Department Chair of what is
necessary to maintain compliance.
4) LAWN SPRAY ISSUE
HMC provides scheduled spraying of many campus lawns, trees, and
shrubs. Because of allergies and other health risks, state law
requires that information be maintained on the hazards of the
chemicals used. Theresa will provide the required MSDSs and other
related data.
5) COMMITTEE NAME CHANGE
After discussion, a motion was made and carried that the current
name be changed, from the Safety Committee, back to the original
name of the "Employee" Safety Committee. The insert in the HMC
directory and the Committee letterhead will reflect this change.
6) OPEN DISCUSSION
A. The all-campus Safety Meeting will be held on Wednesday,
September 13, at 7:30 am. Contact Annie if you would like to
attend.
B. The faculty, staff, and students should be encouraged to
use the HMC Employee Safety Committee website to obtain
all kinds of information on employee safety and training.
7) Next meeting will be: Friday, September 15, 2000, at 9:00 in
the Stauffer Lounge.
A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in
Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).
If you would like a hard copy, send your request to Annie Atiyeh
at annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu
