Minutes of Employee Safety Committee Meeting on 2/1/02

Harvey Mudd College Employee Safety Committee
*******************************************

Minutes from Meeting on February 1, 2002

In Attendance:

Annie Atiyeh (Physics - annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu)
Lillian McCollum (Chemistry - lillian_mccollum@hmc.edu)
Elaine Guerra (Biology - elaine_guerra@hmc.edu)
Mike Wheeler (Machine Shop - mike_wheeler@hmc.edu)
Chauncey Jones (EH&S Specialist - chanuceyj@cuc.claremont.edu)

Agenda Items:

1) NEEDLE DISPOSAL
Annie mentioned that information on needle disposal would be
published in the weekly "Green Sheet" as a part of the HMC
Employee Safety Committee community relations effort. The
information would deal with needle disposal outlets for private
    citizen use (e.g. diabetics, etc.)

2) AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT REPORT
The campus-wide air quality testing and evaluation was completed
last November. The report of evaluation, conducted by Healthy
    Buildings International is now available.

Lillian will e-mail Jan Brown and request that Jan forward to her
several copies of the evaluation. These copies will be circulated
among the Committee members. Aaron Neilson, General Manager of HMC
Dining Services, said that it would be important for this information
to be in the form of a "lay person summary" of the full report.
Lillian will also request that Jan Brown forward a copy to Tony
Pennington, CUC EH&S Manager, and to Theresa Potter, HMC Director
    of Facilities & Maintenance.

3) ACETONE STORAGE
Chemistry Department plans to store two 55-gallon drums of acetone in
the Libra loading dock cage. Since space is minimal, Lillian will
contact Tony about specific regulatory storage requirements. Theresa
and Chanucey should be contacted concerning lifting and moving
    the drums.

4) OPEN DISCUSSION

    A. Chauncey mentioned that most colleges have sold their large vehicle
vans that were used to transport 12 or more passengers. Training
for operation of these vans can no longer be obtained through
EH&S, but must be obtained through the DMV.

    B. Kimberly Rogers in Human Resources will seek information from
employees about ergonomics on an "as needed" basis.

    C. Serious attention was paid to the matter of numbering the various
buildings on the HMC campus. This would aid emergency response
personnel in quickly locating the appropriate building.

It was also noted that all of the basement floors of the HMC
academic buildings (Jacobs, Keck, Parsons, Beckman, Olin) should
be specifically labeled and numbered to promote ease of location.

5) Next meeting will be: Thursday, March 28, 2002, at 11:00am in the
   Stauffer Lounge, Keck Building.

A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in
Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).

If you would like a hard copy, send your request to Annie Atiyeh
at annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu
