Agenda Items:
1) SAFETY TRAINING SESSIONS
A Fire Estinguisher Training Session is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, 2002 from
1:30 pm until 3:00pm. The lecture portion of the session will be presented in
Sprague Library for faculty and staff. The actual hands-on portion will be
held behind Thomas-Garrett in the HMC Amphitheatre.
Last year most of the employees participating in CPR training were from
Dining Services. Kimberly Rogers in Human Resources also attended. Theresa
said that she annually schedules CPR training for F&M employees through the
American Heart Association. She is willing to make this training, for both CPR
and First Aid, available to the HMC Community. Theresa will notify the HMC
Community about the upcoming training scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, 2002.
Expenses will be paid from the Employee Safety Committee budget.
2) AIR QUALITY REPORT
Annie and Hal were present when Healthy Buildings International gave a report
on the air quality of HMC academic buildings. Theresa mentioned that Healthy
Buildings International said there were no asbestos problems. She also said
that CUC Physical Plant periodically checks for asbestos.
The overall message conveyed is that HMC could test for everything, but this
testing is extremely expensive. A more reasonable plan is to treat the
symptoms by installing filters and cleaning the air ducts. Since the company
has not determined the cause of the dust/grit in the air ducts, the proposal is
to clean the problem areas, repair the air ducts, and clean the chilled water
lines. These changes will be made before any new filters are installed. In
addition, the present upgrading of the filters will improve the quality of the
air within the buildings. These filters will remove small particles more
efficiently.
A time for beginning this work has not yet been set. F&M has begun the
improvements, and is awaiting funding to do the necessary upgrades.
3) SENIOR STAFF MEETING
Annie will attend the next senior staff meeting to give a report regarding the
Employee Safety Committee's activities. This meeting will be held on Tuesday,
May 14, 2002. Annie mentioned the low percentage of senior staff members
attending the scheduled safety training sessions.
4) MAINTENANCE OF SAFETY MATRICES
Annie proposed giving F&M and Dining Services the responsibility of scheduling
their respective departmental safety training sessions and maintaining their
respective departmental employee matrices. Theresa has expressed a desire to
monitor safety training and keep records for F&M.
If this is agreeable, Annie will make sure that Theresa has the booklets and
other information for new hires.
5) OPEN DISCUSSION
A. The LA Fire Marshall has stressed the importance of posting directional
signs in the basement of the Libra Complex area. There was some discussion
about providing access to exits during an emergency.
B. The Emergency Response Team is now referred to as the Incident Management
Team. Kim May remains chair of this team. The Comittee determined that
a link should be established, on the HMC Employee Safety Committee website
homepage, to the IMT website.
6) Next meeting will be: a luncheon meeting on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at
noon at the Faculty House
A computer record and a hard copy of this report will be kept in
Lillian McCollum's office (2310 Jacobs).
If you would like a hard copy, send your request to Annie Atiyeh
at annie_atiyeh@hmc.edu
