Super-Indexes

NTTC Super Index

LSU Federal Government Agencies

Maintained by the Louisiana State University Libraries, this site, organized by branch, then agency, then office, probably includes every federal site in existence.

GSA Government Information

This huge site, maintained by the General Services Administration (and requiring some real navigational skills), has a very useful federal directory, including Federal Yellow Pages telephone directory, numerous downloadable federal forms (copyright, student financial aid, IRS, passports, etc.) and more.

Congressional Activity, Legislation, Status of Legislation

Thomas (Library of Congress)

This site represents the best of the Internet in a Democracy. From here you can review pending legislation or laws already passed (since the 103rd Congress), read summaries, find the legislative history or even download the full text of all versions of all bills and laws submitted since the 103rd Congress. You can also consult the Congressional Quarterly, and much more.

CSpan

CSpan and CSpan2 cover hearings, floor debates and other Congressional matters on television. This site includes the Congressional Agenda, commentary, and good links to other sites.

Means of contacting members of the House, voting records, current information about floor activity, schedules, rules, and operations.

Senate

Scheduled legislative activities, committee information, background information, limited information on Senators.

Budgetary Documents and Data

Office of Management and Budget

This OMB site has a lot of budget material, including the entire budget - the full set of documents described in Red Ink Table 4.1 - more than 2,000 pages. [Use the site below as a shortcut to the federal budget if you don't want to navigate through the OMB pages.] Also includes the Federal Register.

Budget of the United States Government

This is the actual line item budget, thousands of pages of it, most of it in PDF format. This is the same document that is described in Red Ink in Table 4.1. This is the President's budget, and this site will always have the most current version of it.

Monthly Treasury Statement

Specifically, the U.S. Treasury's Monthly Treasury Statement of Receipts and Outlays of the U.S. Government, the most current of all budgetary data. It appears here before it appears anywhere else.

Public Debt

This U.S. Treasury site calculates the public debt daily - to the penny! This, however, is the Gross Debt, not the Net Debt (see Section 1.5 of Red Ink for the important distinction).

U.S. Treasury Bills, Notes, and Bonds and Treasury Direct

Treasury Direct

This U.S. Treasury Site offers general information on Treasury Bills, Notes, Bonds, and includes the auction calendar, results of prior auctions, and Treasury Direct instructions, which allows one to submit a tender to purchase Treasury securities directly. At this site you can sumbit a request that the tender form be mailed within 7-10 days.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York

This is another Treasury Direct site that has information similar to the Treasury site above. This site, though, has a printable tender form that supposedly can be filled out, printed, and mailed.

Taxes

IRS Forms and Publications

This useful site allows you to download virtually every useful IRS form and publication in existence. All documents are in PDF format and require the Adobe Acrobat reader.

Social Security, Health Care, Entitlements

Health Care Financing Administration

This HCFA stats site is a good source for health care data in general, including statistics on Medicare and Medicaid. Many data files are zipped, though the user can download a copy of PKUnzip to unzip and decompress the files.

Social Security Administration

This SSA statistics page has data on OASDI and SSI outlays, and includes a series of major research publications offered by the SSA, downloadable in PDF format.

Politics and Elections

Federal Election Commission

Good source for voting statistics, election laws, contributions, PACs. Financial information about candidates, parties, Political Election Committees. The information on some of these pages is shocking.

Census Bureau Voting Statistics

A good source for voting statistics. Go back to the Census Bureau home page for some other stats, including economic indicators and census data, but a lot of this must be purchased through STAT-USA, which this author does not recommend except as a last resort.
