2002 Harvey Mudd College
Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement
Summer Enrichment Program
June 24-July 26
The goal of the Harvey Mudd College (HMC) Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is to increase the number of students who are interested in pursuing careers in mathematics, engineering, and science. By broadening exposure and intellectually challenging middle school and high school students in these areas, HMC hopes to generate genuine excitement and desire amongst participants so that they want to continue with their science, engineering, and mathematics studies in future years.
The SEP includes four fields of study: science, math, technology, and English. During the typical day, teachers lecture on theory and then students do hands-on and minds-on activities. Before the days end, students compare their results with the original theories presented by the teachers.
The Science Camp is an additional component of the SEP. Students do several hands-on projects during the course of the program. The projects expose students to different science and engineering theories and provide the opportunity for students to experiment by making the project and then reconstructing as necessary to improve the project.
