Harvey Mudd College
Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

Seminar Requirement

TO: Faculty Members at the Claremont Colleges

Every Harvey Mudd College student must fulfill a seminar requirement during the junior or senior year.  The elements of a seminar course, as the Humanities and Social Sciences Department uses the term, are listed below. If you believe that the course indicated here and for which you are responsible qualifies as a seminar, please sign and date this form.  The HMC student who took or is taking the course from you will return the signed form to her or his humanities and social sciences advisor.  Please note that directed reading courses and independent studies cannot satisfy the seminar requirement, and that seminar courses must be taken for a letter grade.

  • Class size is not more than 20
  • Assigned readings will be primary/secondary (non-textbook) sources
  • Students will take responsibility for many of the presentations
  • Research and writing will represent a substantial component of the course work
