Media Studio

HMC's Media Studio was founded by Professor J'nan Sellery and began as a facility for student-made multiscreen image and sound projections. It segued into a video production facility with the help of a one-time capital grant from the Lantz Foundation. Professor Rachel Mayeri, an award-winning media artist who exhibits internationally, began teaching at HMC in 2001. She continues the tradition of encouraging artistic expression, story telling, comedy, drama, and media criticism at Mudd.

Two media studies courses, Introduction to Video Production and Introduction to Digital Media Art, bring Media Studio equipment to life in projects that include experiments in time, karaoke videos, found footage montage, fake video games, and documentary.

Student Projects from Digital Media Art

The Pitzer College Production Office maintains, explains, and reserves Media Studio as the core of the Media Studies Intercollegiate Program on a trial basis. The move to Pitzer expands HMC students' choice of equipment to include film cameras, newer model digital video cameras, still cameras, and other exciting devices. The Pitzer Production Office provides professional tutorials on production equipment and editing. The new facility includes top-of-the-line editing suites with 24 hour access, and is a focal point for media production for the five colleges. Additionally, HMC will house at least four Final Cut Pro editing suites, and a Mac lab with digital imaging and motion graphics software.

Music

The Media Studio of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department provides professional editing equipment and software for students enrolled in Introduction to Computer Music and other media studies courses. The audio studio includes a Mac G4 running current computer synthesis, MIDI, and audio recording and editing programs and plug-ins. MIDI equipment includes an 88-note keyboard controller, sampler, and synthesizers. Audio equipment includes a programmable 32-channel digital mixing console, TC Electronics digital effects unit, Alesis digital effects unit, dbx compressor/limiter, digital multitrack, cassette, and CD player. Playback is on a Hafler amp and JBL 4411 speakers. The Media Studio also has an isolated recording booth with microphones and direct lines to the patch bay.
