Arranging
for a Directed Reading Course
Students
may approach departmental and non-departmental faculty members about setting
up directed reading courses. Individual faculty members
are under no obligation to give courses of this kind, but they are often
willing to do so if they have time and are confident that the student can
work independently. Generally speaking, a faculty member is more
likely to agree to a directed reading if he or she knows the student from
prior course work and if the goals of the course are clearly defined. A
faculty member is less likely to agree if the projected readings duplicate
an existing class or take an introductory approach to a subject that the
student has not yet studied formally. Please note that directed readings
cannot count for seminar credit, nor do they typically fulfill distribution. See
the Harvey Mudd College Catalog for further information. Print
this form and fill it out as completely as you can before you visit prospective
faculty sponsors.
