DialogWeb Biosis - Biological Abstracts & Zoological Record

  • http://www.dialogweb.com/
  • logon with username: 155693 or 155694 and password given in class
  • Do not share the password and have a search strategy (ANDs and ORs) ready because...
  • The Libraries pay per use/time/and records printed
  • Select database 0005 for Biosis Previews (=Biological Abstracts) or 0185 for Zoological Record
  • Watch checkbox that says search within last result set (often have to turn off)
  • After you have entered concepts (with optional ORs) as individual searches, you can AND results together
       e.g., s1 and s3 and s5
  • Be sure to LOG OFF when you are finished (see below for exporting records to Refworks)

To download Web of Science records into Refworks:

  • After marking records, go to Marked List and then Save to File in the Field Tagged format.
  • Open the file, and select all and copy the text (even if it seems garbled), and open your Refworks Account.
  • Select import from the reference menu, then select: Import Filter/Data Source: ISI (Institute for Scientific Information)
  • Under Database: select Web of Science
  • Then paste into the Import Data from the following Text window, click and Voila.

The records are now a part of your database along with those handy Get this Item buttons.

To download PubMed records into Refworks (and add easy access to electronic full text):

  • In PubMed, after you’ve selected the records you want select MEDLINE and click Display.
 
 Show: 
  • Then Send to Text.  Then select all in browser window, copy the text, and open your Refworks Account.
  • Select import from the reference menu, then select: Import Filter/Data Source: NLM PubMed
  • Then paste into the Import Data from the following Text window, click and Voila.

The records are now a part of your database along with those handy Get this item buttons (even though they’re not in PubMed).

To download Biological Sciences (CSA) records into Refworks, just follow the instructions in the database -- it’s easy!

To download Biosis - Biological Abstracts or Zoological Record records into Refworks (and add easy access to electronic full text):

  • After you select the records you want, choose destination: Email/Fax/Postal and click Display/Send
  • Output as Text with tags, and format for email addresses No attachment support
  • Under addresses, create new email, enter your username, then email address, and select Email Software Generic (no attachment support)
  • Then, you’re stuck because of a bad user interface.  Click back 2x and then refresh.
  • Check the box next to the email address you just created and click Send and then Send now
  • After 5 min or so, you’ll receive an email with the records in text form
  • Select & copy the text from the email Starting with ’Record - 1... to the end of the last record ending in ...||
  • Then
    • open your Refworks Account.
    • Select import from the reference menu, then select: Import Filter/Data Source: Dialog (Tagged Format)
    • Under Database: select Biosis
    • Then paste into the Import Data from the following Text window, click and Voila...

    ...the records are now a part of your database along with those handy Get this item buttons.

    (Note that as of 9/1/04 the biosis filter did not work quite right with Zoological record.  Records from this database will require some editing.)

  • Remember to logoff once they’re in.
