The Biology Department is located in the F. W. Olin Science Center, which also houses the departments of mathematics and computer science. In the biology department, each faculty member has an office and a spacious laboratory for student-faculty research. In addition, the department houses three teaching laboratories, two preparation rooms, darkrooms, a fresh-water animal room, a sea-water room, a walk-in cold room, a storeroom, and offices for staff and the Biology Writing Fellow.

Harvey Mudd Biology students also have access to facilities belonging to or affiliated with the Claremont Colleges. Some we use frequently include:

• The Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station

  Located within walking distance just across the street from the Olin building, the 85-acre Bernard Field Station contains grassland and riparian habitats, a former citrus orchard now undergoing succession back to native vegetation, an artificial lake, vernal pools, and one of the largest remaining parcels of Coastal Sage Scrub in Los Angeles County. The BFS serves as outdoor laboratory for Harvey Mudd courses and research projects.
  

• The Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden

  Located adjacent to the Bernard Biological Field Station, the RSABG has excellent facilities for research and education in systematic and evolutionary botany. DNA sequencing for Harvey Mudd classes and research projects is carried out on the Garden’s ABI PRISM 377 Automated Fluorescent DNA Sequencer. The RSABG offers a graduate program in Botany in cooperation with The Claremont Graduate University. Harvey Mudd students may take courses and carry out research projects at the Garden.

• Seeley G. Mudd Science Library

  Biology books and journals for the Claremont Colleges are primarily located in the Mudd Science Library on the Pomona College campus, at the corner of College Avenue and 7^th Street. The library also houses collections in astronomy, chemistry, geology, mathematics, and physics.
