Harvey Mudd provides an excellent environment for studies in environmental biology. Its exceptional rigor in science, engineering, and mathematics, its strong emphasis on humanities and social science, and its mission of socially responsible scientific and technological leadership all contribute to this environment.
Biology majors have several options for focusing their academic studies in environmental biology. They may complete their Humanities and Social Science concentration in Environmental Studies. They may select their elective courses within the Biology Major to form a concentration in Environmental Biology, and they may apply for the Semester in Environmental Science (see below). They may also complete their Humanities and Social Sciences concentration in Environmental Studies, or they can double major in Biology at HMC and Environmental Studies at Pitzer. Students may also design a major in Environmental Studies as an Individual Program of Study.
Semester in Environmental Science:
Harvey Mudd College is part of a consortium that enables HMC students to apply for the Semester in Environmental Science (SES) at the Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts. This semester-long program emphasizes interdisciplinary, inquiry-based approaches to the in-depth study of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Biology 171 and 173 are only offered as part of this program. For more information, see the SES web site. Students interested in this program should contact Prof. Catherine McFadden for information and applications
HMC Center for Environmental Studies:
The Biology Department also participates in the HMC Center for Environmental Studies (www.environcenter.hmc.edu), which coordinates multi-disciplinary programs in environmental studies. For more information or to design an environmental studies concentration, contact Prof. Stephen Adolph, the Environmental Studies advisor for the biology department.
