INTERNATIONAL CHILDRENíS BOOK DAY

CLAREMONT, CALIF.ó A blue rabbit, chicks, and a plucky duckling will celebrate springtime while inspiring children to read at the annual International Childrenís Book Day at Claremont Graduate University on Saturday, April 1. The event, free and open to the public, will send young children hopping to a menagerie of colorful stories and spring-related activities.

Local librarians and educators from the Foothill Council of the International Reading Association will host the popular childrenís affair from 10 to 11 a.m. at the George G. Stone Center for Childrenís Books at 131 East Tenth Street in Claremont. Refreshments will also be provided.

Featured stories include "I Bought a Baby Chicken" by Kelly Milner Halls, "Blue Rabbit and Friends" by Christopher Wormell, and "Go to Sleep, Daisy" by Jane Simmons. Hall's baby chicken story was inspired by her daughterís unfortunate case of chickenpox.  Wormell's books are famous for his picture prints carved from linoleum blocks. And, Simmon's book is one of the "Daisy Duckling" series.

Adults are asked to stay with their children throughout the event. Visitors are invited to join the Friends of Stone program, which for $25 entitles the user to one year of borrowing privileges from the George G. Stone Center for Childrenís Books.

Claremont Graduate University is dedicated exclusively to graduate education, awarding degrees in 23 disciplines. A member of the Claremont Colleges, CGU combines relevant ìhuman-scaleî instruction with the facilities and academic breadth of a medium-sized university.

What:  Stories and crafts presented by Foothill Council of the International Reading Association. Refreshments provided.
